Back by popular demand, Kevin Wester will be offering a tour of historic St. Mary’s Church in Port Washington, Wisconsin, on Saturday, July 25, 10-11:30 a.m.
Founded by Luxembourg immigrants in 1853, St. Mary’s Parish’s present church was built in 1882 during the pastorate of Luxembourg immigrant priest Father Henry Willmes. The current church building is the third worship space to serve the parish. Known as one of the most beautiful churches in Wisconsin, St. Mary’s, which has many fascinating Luxembourg connections, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
The tour is free of charge and is co-sponsored by Luxembourg Legacy, Port Washington Historical Society and St. John XXIII Parish. All are invited and welcome to attend.
Kevin, who was born in Port Washington, Wisconsin, and grew up in nearby Belgium, is an expert in the history of northern Ozaukee County and Luxembourgers in America. He co-authored a history of St. Mary’s Church for its sesquicentennial in 2003. In recognition of his promotion of Luxembourg-American relations he was knighted by Grand Duke Henri in 2011 and awarded the Medallion of Honor from Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich and the Archdiocese of Luxembourg in 2015.Kevin is the former executive director of the Luxembourg American Cultural Society and founder and CEO of Luxembourg Legacy.
