The oldest Luxembourg society still in existence today is the Luxembourg Brotherhood of America (LBA). Founded in Chicago in 1887, the LBA was organized in sections in various parts of the United States with the overriding leadership being the Grand Lodge of the Luxembourg Brotherhood of America. At one point, there were more than 20 sections. Today, four active sections remain.

Originally, the LBA welcomed only men as members, while women of Chicago organized several Schwesterbunds (clubs for women/sisters) in various parts of the city. For many years now, the LBA has welcomed men and women as members.

Each LBA section has a variety of social events throughout the year, the best known being the annual Schobermesse (German name for Luxembourg’s Schouberfouer or fall festival). This festival was begun by Section 3 of the LBA in 1904 as a fair to show produce and flowers grown by Chicago’s well-known greenhouse owners and truck farmers.

The LBA is also the proud publisher of the monthly Luxembourg News of America which features information about Luxembourg and Luxembourgers in America as well as LBA news. Luxembourg News is available as a hard copy or electronic newsletter. The hardcopy version has a yearly rate of $30 domestic/$36 international. The electronic version is $25 domestic/$25 international.

The newspaper is a fun, affordable way to learn what’s going on in Luxembourg and in American Luxembourg communities, according to Kevin Wester, founder and CEO of Luxembourg Legacy.

“I highly encourage subscribing to the Luxembourg News of America. Besides keeping abreast of everything that’s happening in the communities here and Luxembourg, it’s also a wonderful way to support the Luxembourg Brotherhood of America with its long tradition of fostering Luxembourg American relations.”
