Should you apply for a Luxembourg passport?
As a new citizen of Luxembourg, the decision about whether to apply for a Luxembourg passport is totally up to you. While some people get a passport just for fun, below are some additional considerations that may affect your decision.
- The Luxembourg Passport Office advises dual citizens to always travel (even internationally) using the passport of your country of residence. If you are a U.S. resident, you travel using your U.S. passport rather than a Luxembourg passport, even while traveling within the EU.
- Having a Luxembourg passport is mandatory if you plan to live, study, work or retire in the EU. If you choose to do this, then you need to show your Luxembourg passport to the authorities in that particular EU country.
- As a non-resident Luxembourg citizen, voting is optional. However, if you do opt to vote, a Luxembourg passport or Luxembourg ID card is required to receive an absentee ballot. Typically, most new non-resident Luxembourgers choose not to vote because the ballot is in French and most non-residents lack knowledge of the Luxembourg political process, parties and candidates. There is also a sense that legislation in Luxembourg does not directly impact non-resident citizens.
