
Does the new 10-year Luxembourg passport apply to children as well as adults?
As of May 11, 2026, a Luxembourg passport will be valid for 10 years rather than the previous five-year passport. This new policy does not apply to children’s Luxembourg passports.
Luxembourg passport validity
- Children younger than 4: two years
- Children 4-8: five years
- Adults 18 and older: 10 years
Luxembourg ID card validity
- Children younger than 4: two years
- Children 4-15: five years
- Children 15 and older (and adults): 10 years
Who must appear in person when applying for or renewing a Luxembourg passport and ID card?
Remember that Luxembourg requires ALL APPLICANTS (adults and minors) applying for or renewing passports and ID cards to appear in person at a Luxembourg passport and ID card office. Children 10 and older are required to be fingerprinted when applying for and renewing passports.
In the United Sates, passport/ID card offices are located at the Luxembourg Embassy in Washington, D.C., the Consulate General in New York City and the Consulate General in San Francisco. You must go to the proper office based on the jurisdiction of the state in which you live. An appointment is required at all these offices and may be requested online.

San Francisco Consulate General
Includes residents of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington.
The embassy in Washington, D.C. covers the entire U.S. but focuses on states not under the jurisdiction of any of the Consulates General. Midwestern states fall under the jurisdiction of the embassy in Washington, D.C.
You can also apply for and renew a Luxembourg passport and ID card in Luxembourg without an appointment at the National Passport Bureau and the Guichet office for an ID card.
