Dual Citizen Insights

Now that you’re an official Luxembourg citizen, should you apply for a Luxembourg/EU passport? In this month’s Dual Citizen Insights, we discuss why you may want to get a Luxembourg passport.

Here at Luxembourg Legacy, we frequently get asked by our clients if they should get a Luxembourg/EU passport, and the answer is that it is entirely up to you. However, the National Passport Office in Luxembourg City offers this information:

Your name and address appear in all security databases throughout the world. So, if you have U.S. residency, you will normally always travel on your U.S. passport (even internationally).

You must have a Luxembourg passport and/or Luxembourg ID card if you want to vote in Luxembourg elections. We find that most new Luxembourgers do not vote, which might be because most non-resident citizens feel that they don’t know enough about the candidates or the issues and aren’t personally impacted by them.

The only mandatory reason to get a Luxembourg/EU passport is if you plan to live, study, work or retire in the EU. To exercise those rights, you must present your Luxembourg/EU passport to EU authorities in that country.

Finally, new citizens often ask if there’s a time limit to apply for a Luxembourg/EU passport. As a full-fledged citizen of Luxembourg, you can apply for a Luxembourg/EU passport at any time in the future.
