Luxembourgish Roots
Born and raised in Wautoma, Wisconsin, Mary’s mother Betty (Schommer) Gellerup, was 100 percent Luxembourgish. Mary remembers her Grandma Ella (Neuhengen) Schommer talking about her childhood on the family farm near Port Washington, Wisconsin. Her Great Grandmother Catherine (Frantz) Neuhengen, lived with her Grandma Ella and Grandpa Bill Schommer in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, in her later years and spoke only Luxembourgish.
Mary knew she had roots in Luxembourg but didn’t start researching her ancestry until later in life. She got her dual citizenship in 2018, and her children Gregory, Elizabeth and Sophie secured their dual citizenship in 2024.
