Settlement Spotlight: Aurora Street Names

Last month, the Lion Tales Settlement Spotlight shared the history of Luxembourgers in Aurora, Illinois, one of the largest settlements of Luxembourgers in the Midwest, and its Luxie Club, the last Luxembourgish social hall still operating in the U.S. This second installment takes a look at numerous roads in Aurora named for Luxembourg immigrant families.

The City of Aurora may have the largest number of roads name after Luxembourg immigrant families of any U.S. city. Some of these roads were named for the early Luxembourg settlers who had farms on the road. These road names stand as a permanent tribute to the Luxembourg heritage in Aurora that will be memorialized for generations.

Luxembourg road names in Aurora include:

  • Assell Avenue, named after the Assell family, of Waldbillig, Luxembourg
  • Hankes Road and Hankes Avenue,named after the Hankes family, of Haller, Luxembourg
  • Hermes Avenue, named after the Hermes family, of Eschdorf, Luxembourg
  • Jungels Avenue, named after the Jungels family, of Waldbillig, Luxembourg
  • Konen Avenue, named after the Konen family, of Waldbillig, Luxembourg
  • Lehnertz Avenue, named after the Lehnertz family, of Ermsdorf, Luxembourg
  • Michels Avenue, named after the Michels family, of Gilsdorf, Luxembourg
  • Molitor Road, named after the Molitor family, of Heffingen, Luxembourg
  • Reckinger Road, named after the Reckinger family, of Waldbillig and Berdorf, Luxembourg
