Dual Citizen Insights

In the U.S., most of us use our drivers license as our main form of ID. In most other countries around the world, people have government-issued photo identification cards as their primary proof of ID.

Whether you get a Luxembourg ID card is totally up to you but it can be very useful.

“It’s almost like a mini passport,” said Kevin Wester, of Luxembourg Legacy. “When I lived in Spain, I always carried my Luxembourg ID card rather than my passport and used it for things like picking up registered mail at the post office. In fact, it can be used as your ID when flying within the European Union, European Economic Area and Schengen Area and Switzerland without having to bring your passport along.”

If you have your Luxembourg passport, should you also get a Luxembourg ID card? It’s a good idea because the two kind of work “hand in glove,” according to Kevin.

Remember, though, that just like a passport for Luxembourg-American dual citizens, a Luxembourg ID card must be renewed in person at the Bierger-Center in Luxembourg City, a communal office in the country or at a Luxembourg Embassy in the U.S.
